Welcome to the historic "Smith House," Hightstowns oldest house. Named after its resident R.M. Smith, the NJ State Treasurer from 1853 to 1865. This stunning and impressive pre-revolutionary building dates back to 1770 at which time a part of the building was used as a general store. In 1819 it also had the distinction of becoming the area's first post office. Conveniently located a stone's throw away from the town center, this fantastic property is within the Borough's Historic District and the Downtown Gateway zone, allowing the new owner to live and run their business out of the same property. This iconic corner property has excellent traffic exposure and easy access to downtown shopping and dining. Sitting on one of its many brick patios and surrounded by the lavish landscaping, one can easily find seclusion and comfort, and it is easy to forget its central location. The building underwent extensive renovations when it was purchased in 2005 by the current owner, with no expenses spared. The renovations balanced the goal of maintaining the building's historic character while at the same time creating a building that was as maintenance-free and energy-efficient as possible. Some of the numerous upgrades included complete new electrical wiring, plumbing, insulation, roof, on-demand water heater, three gas-fired HVAC units, kitchen and bathrooms, and over 40 high-end aluminum energy-efficient windows with wood mullions inside. The house also has an interconnected fire / alarm system and a video surveillance system. Specially imported 8 3/4 inch wide yellow pine hardwood floor from Michigan replaced the original flooring throughout the central part of the house, which the owner used as the showroom to his antique import business. In contrast, the kitchen area and second-floor bedroom with ensuite bathroom received an oak floor. Although the residence has various entrances, the main entrance on Stockton St. features a highly decorative porch with mahogany steps and a landing, the roof supported by an elaborate 19th century wrought iron structure. As you enter through the antique multi-paneled front door, you enter a grand foyer that houses the original staircase and three decorative arched openings, one leading to the back porch, two to large first-floor rooms. The ceiling heights are nearly 9 feet, and the rooms feature some of the most fantastic custom-designed moldings around the windows and baseboard. As you make your way towards the kitchen, you pass through a tiled floor room, meticulously redone with antique rough-hewn beams that are both structural and decorative. This room has a double door leading to the outside complete with a concrete handicap access ramp. Also present is an extra-wide stairway that leads to the second floor and two other doors, one leading to the kitchen, the other to the home's second full bathroom. The open concept kitchen is complete with stainless steel appliances, a gas cooktop, a built-in wine cooler, a mielle dishwasher, and a double sink. Access to the second full bathroom with a glass-enclosed shower is possible from here as well. As you navigate up the broad staircase, you enter a large room with a vaulted ceiling. To your right, you can access the private office/bedroom, replete with vaulted ceiling and complete with an ensuite bathroom having an oversized soaking tub/shower combination and a washer and dryer. To the left, there is another shorter stairway leading to the home's two other rooms.
